Artists Square

This proposal questions and dismantles competition brief in terms of preconditions for square design. Given that the municipality was nostalgic about the idea, but financially limited in reconstructing the old fire burnt hotel Lokanda in the centre of Old Royal Capital Cetinje, we tried to find a more sustainable solution for the present conditions. The proposal is sensitive not only towards the modest resources of the city to reconstruct the historical and benchmark point, but also towards the new language of urban space rising from a horizontal plane which becomes a platform for events and evokes sensations.

On a verge of becoming a monument, the square-image or a square-scene materialises the local memory by engraving the facade of the hotel Lokanda into the pavement of the slope. Patches on the square represent the frames for street art, be that flat or spatial installation. The image of the hotel is not a mere reconstruction of the original volume with improvised patina, but an homage to the past with a clearly articulated decision to move forward.
